University teaching

I run a full-day art workshop with DClinPsy trainees at the University of Essex based on my zine A is for Awkward. The session examines differing perspectives on the mental health system from service users and staff.

I teach 3 sessions a year on London South Bank University’s MSc Mental Health and Clinical Psychology; these cover a practical art workshop, user/survivor involvement in research and research ethics; and the “Borderline Personality Disorder” construct.

If you are interested in inviting me to teach or present at your university, please email me.

Open training

I run open full-day training sessions via Mind in Camden / London Hearing Voices Network critiquing the construct of “Borderline Personality Disorder” and looking at ways to support people who self harm. So far I have run three sold-out trainings and hope to run more in future. I have moved my training online due to the Coronavirus pandemic and it is likely it will stay online for some time. The course covers:

  • Feminist and queer issues around “Borderline Personality Disorder”.

  • Is Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder a viable alternative to “BPD”? What might ICD-11 mean for those currently diagnosed?

  • Everyday trauma: day-to-day erosion and the idea of “a stable sense of self”.

  • The multiple meanings and functions of self-harm.

  • Practical and creative approaches to self-harm and suicidality, including harm minimisation, managing clinical fear of risk, and particularly the minimisation of iatrogenic harm.

There is usually a waiting list for this course. You can sign up to be notified when booking opens by entering your email below.

I am always looking for new training opportunities; I am particularly keen to work with frontline clinicians who might not usually have access to more critical training, such as GPs and nurses. If you are interested in working with me to deliver training in your organisation, please email me.
